RESEARCH INTEREST:

The last 2 decades have witnessed the emergence of antimicrobial resistance in multiple Gram positive pathogens. Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE), methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and penicillin-resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae (PRSP) are now endemic worldwide. Recent reports of vancomycin-resistant S. aureus and vancomycin-tolerant S. pneumoniae raise the specter of untreatable infections with these microbes. New methods are needed to further understanding of the virulence mechanisms of these organisms; such insight may provide new targets for the development of antimicrobial agents. I'm interested in developing simple model host systems to study the genetic and molecular mechanisms of microbial pathogenesis and parasite-host interaction with these important human pathogens.
