Using Galleria mellonella as a model host for P. aeruginosa strain PA14, we identified eleven virulence factors not previously isolated in screens using Arabidopsis or C. elegans. One of these factors is a key component of the type III secretion system, a known P. aeruginosa virulence determinant. Although this secretion system has been shown to be important for pathogenicity in a variety of plant and animal pathogens, this is the first indication that type III secretion is also important for PA14 infection of our model hosts. The main objective of my research is to determine whether or not the P. aeruginosa type III secretion system plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of each of our model hosts, and if so, to identify the relevant type III secreted molecules.
